Arctic Monkeys are a rock band from Sheffield, England, formed in 2002. The band comprises Alex Turner (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Jamie Cook (guitar, keyboards), Nick O'Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals). The bassist and backing vocalist Andy Nicholson left the band in 2006 after their debut album was released.
The band first gained attention through the internet and were seen as a new way of promoting and marketing music. Their debut album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" released in 2006 became the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history at the time of its release and is considered one of the best debut albums. It won Best British Album at the 2007 Brit Awards. Their second album, "Favourite Worst Nightmare" (2007), was also critically acclaimed and won Best British Album at the 2008 Brit Awards. The band released two more albums, "Humbug" (2009) and "Suck It and See" (2011).
The Arctic Monkeys gained worldwide recognition with their fifth album "AM" (2013), which included the hit song "Do I Wanna Know?" It topped four Billboard charts and was certified platinum in the US. At the 2014 Brit Awards, the album won British Album of the Year, making it their third album to do so. Their sixth album, "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" (2018), was a departure from their previous work as it was piano-oriented instead of guitar-heavy. It received a Best Alternative Music Album nomination at the 2019 Grammy Awards, their second nomination after "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not". Their seventh album, "The Car", was released in 2022 and received nominations for the Ivor Novello Awards and the Mercury Prize in 2023.
In the UK, Arctic Monkeys became the first independent-label band to debut at number one with their first five albums. They have won seven Brit Awards, with three wins each for Best British Group and British Album of the Year, becoming the only band to win both categories three times. They have also won a Mercury Prize for "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not", an Ivor Novello Award, and 20 NME Awards. They have been nominated for six Grammy Awards and received Mercury Prize nominations in 2007, 2013, 2018, and 2023. Their albums "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" and "AM" are included in NME's and different editions of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time lists.
