      Nicki Minaj Background

Nicki Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj in Trinidad in 1982. She had a tough childhood with an abusive father, but her mother was supportive of her. Nicki Minaj auditioned to be a part of LaGuardia High School, a secondary school that focused on performing arts, and got accepted. She was cast in an Off-Broadway play, but later had trouble finding steady work as an actress.

As she was working to make ends meet, she joined a rap group called Full Force and worked with them to record a WWE entrance song. Although it was successful, she later left the group and began uploading her music to MySpace instead. From there, she was noticed by Fendi and was signed to the Dirty Money Entertainment label. After releasing just two mixtapes, she was named the Female Artist of the Year by the Underground Music Awards in 2008.
